Dear Parent:
Your son or daughter
has left your home and joined us at the College. For most first-year college students, this is
the biggest transition of their lives.
The first half of fall semester is the critical time in that transition.
In order for the
staff at The College of St. Scholastica to assist in this adjustment, we are
asking for your insights about your child.
Too often new students are hesitant to admit that they have a concern or
to seek assistance. Problems may go
unnoticed by the College until the end of the first semester when grades come
out. We can be more effective if we deal
with problems during the first half of the semester. The enclosed questionnaire is a chance for
our staff to get a head start and try to connect students with rewarding
activities and the assistance they may need.
Your child may feel
grown up and ready to take on the world -- no adult help needed. We will keep your responses
confidential. They will be shared only
with professional staff; the staff will not directly approach the students
about this information but, will monitor any difficulties that come up.
Because we are committed to
early identification and resolution of concerns every new student at The
College of St. Scholastica completes an assessment of academic, social, and
personal skills. Based upon the results
of these assessments, your student will be contacted by one of our professional
staff who will assist with any concerns indicated. Your student will also receive a narrative
report from the assessment that will recommend appropriate services. It is our goal to meet and review these
assessments with each student as soon as possible. You can help by encouraging them to meet with
our staff when we call them to set up an appointment.
The “Family
Educational Rights and Privacy Act” (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the
rights of student education records. Any
student 18 years or over is protected by FERPA.
This means that colleges are not allowed to give any information
concerning a student to anyone (including parents) without written permission
from the student. The only
information parents and others are entitled to is directory information:
Name, Address, Telephone
Number, Date & Place of Birth, Dates of
Attendance, Major, Participation
in Officially recognized Activities and
Sports, Year in School and Most
Recent Educational Institution Attended.

All other
information is protected and cannot be released without written consent from
the student. That is one reason why the
information you provide to use is so helpful when serving your student.
Thank you for taking
the time to return this questionnaire.
We hope it will be the beginning of a successful partnership between
your family and The College of St. Scholastica.
Please feel free to
call us with any questions or concerns.
